Background on the Voices for Sustainability Symposium Series Initiative

With the launch of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), the United Nations has given educators and education policy makers an incredible opportunity. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is not about simply integrating a course on sustainability or ecological literacy into the respective provincial curriculum. It is about ESD becoming the new paradigm itself-in other words, 'revisioning the education system' so that what students learn, how students learn, where students learn, and with whom students learn all become transformed. The UN has given us a measurable timeframe. It is up to us (educators, students, parents, public service, NGO's, governments) to give this decade 'wheels'-wheels that will ignite a new education paradigm for the 21st Century.

In April 2006, the Voices for Sustainability Symposium Series was launched through a partnership between EYES Project and Sea to Sky Outdoor School. Two inaugural symposiums took place: one in Chelsea, Quebec at EYES Project headquarters for central-eastern educators and the other on the Sunshine Coast, BC at Sea to Sky Outdoor School on Keats Island for western educators. The overall objectives for the symposiums included:

    - Bringing teachers and practitioners of environmental education together in a DIALOGUE-BASED event that focused on turning theory into practice by building skills and excitement upon which to move sustainability education forward over the next 10 years and beyond

    - Building 'bioregional learning communities' of educators who understand the imperative of sustainability education and are transforming their lifestyles, classrooms and work environments

  • Bioregional Learning Communities Initiative

    What is the BLC Initiative?

As educators coming from different geographical, socio-economic, and cultural learning settings across Canada, we all have different needs and realities. The Bioregional Learning Communities (BLC) Initiative hopes to capitalize on this by creating regional networks of passionate and committed educators who understand the sustainability imperative and are eager to make learning meaningful in a local context.

The BLC Initiative offers a powerful approach because it is not led by one individual or organization utilizing a routinely standardized and placeless approach. Rather it represents people with a common ethos and a shared 'home place' who mobilize out of a collective spirit towards action, learning and well-being.

What is the goal of the BLC Initiative?

The goal of the BLC Initiative is to bring self-identified committed educators who live in the same bioregions together to form a rich learning community who will regularly meet to share, support, and collaborate with one another to move sustainability education forward in their respective workplaces and communities. Sharing resources, best practices, success stories and cutting edge curricula, along with establishing mentoring and cross-sectoral collaboration opportunities are all critical elements to the BLC Initiative.

    How do BLC's work?

Each BLC has a coordinator who is responsible for organizing the regular meetings (some BLC's meet 1/month, others once every 2-3 months) and for keeping the lines of communication open between BLC members and EYES Project headquarters. EYES Project staff will support each BLC through updates of unique initiatives, programming and curricula unfolding on a national level, as well as share what other BLC's across Canada are doing. The annual Voices for Sustainability Symposium Series (April-see above) offers a wonderful opportunity for cross-regional sharing between BLC's.

    How can I get involved?

BLC's are open to ALL educators who are passionate about sustainability education and are seeking to be part of a supportive community with other committed educators. If this sounds like you, join a Bioregional Learning Community by contacting the coordinator nearest you!!

  • Becoming Societal Change Agents' workshop

Our youth workshops are founded on the question of examining "How youth can become leaders in creating a more sustainable future?" These dynamic hands-on workshops offer skill-building opportunities for students to examine local sustainability issues, and explore ways to take positive school and community action. Utilizing a problem based, participatory, and service learning approach, these workshops will motivate and enable students to build an action plan around a project of interest. Resources and an ongoing supportive framework will be provided in order to ensure long term success of the students' project. (Half Day and Full Day workshops are offered.)
